Google Ads for Law Firms
The most expensive auction in local advertising. Run it on the wrong practice area or the wrong budget and it will empty an account fast.
Paid Search That Respects the Budget Floor
Start with the part most agencies skip. Nobody publishes an authoritative table of what legal clicks cost. Google does not release it, and the figures circulating at marketing conferences come from vendors selling legal marketing. We are not going to quote one at you.
What we will say is this: legal sits at the top of the paid search cost range, personal injury sits at the top of legal, and the only cost number that means anything is the one your own account produces after thirty days in your own market. That is the number we plan against.
The volume behind it is real. A Louisiana Supreme Court performance review completed in 2025 assessed the data collected on nearly 200,000 tort filings reported by district courts under a civil cover sheet statute that ran from 2012 until its repeal in 2024. Every firm chasing that work is bidding against you.
BlakSheep Creative is a veteran-owned marketing agency based in Denham Springs, Louisiana. We build and run paid search for small and midsize firms. We are not lawyers and we do not interpret advertising rules. What an ad may say is decided by your firm and its own counsel under the rules of your bar, and nothing goes live until you tell us the copy is approved.
WHERE THE MONEY LEAKS
Eight Ways a Legal Account Burns Budget
- Broad match on lawyer and attorney. Those two words will spend a monthly budget in a week on law students, salary searches, and people looking for the courthouse. Legal is the worst possible category to be loose in.
- No negative keyword list. Free, pro bono, public defender, jobs, salary, how to sue someone myself, and the name of every law school in the state. Building that list is unglamorous and it is the highest return hour in the account.
- Personal injury on a small budget. Below a real floor the ads show a few times a day at the bottom of the page and the data never reaches significance. You pay for a rounding error.
- One campaign covering every practice area. Criminal defense and estate planning have different urgency, different value, and different hours of day. Sharing a budget means the urgent one eats everything.
- Every ad pointing at the homepage. Someone clicked an ad about a DWI arrest and landed on a page about the firm’s history. The ad promise and the page have to match or the click is wasted.
- No call tracking. Without it you cannot tell which practice area produced the call, which means you cannot tell which half of the spend to cut.
- Ads running when nobody picks up. Paying top dollar for a click at 7pm and sending the caller to voicemail is the most expensive mistake in the account, and the easiest to fix.
- Bidding on competitor names with no plan. Expensive, low converting, occasionally a rules problem depending on the copy, and it invites the same treatment back.
THE PLAN
Fewer Keywords. Tighter Match. Faster Callback
The firm that wins this auction is rarely the one bidding highest. It is the one answering fastest.
We start with the budget floor for your practice area and market, and we say no when it is not there. A serious urban personal injury campaign and a family law campaign in a mid-sized parish are not the same conversation, and pretending otherwise is how firms end up angry at paid search in general.
Where the practice area qualifies, Local Services Ads usually come before standard search ads. Google’s published category list for the United States includes bankruptcy, criminal, DUI, estate, family, immigration, IP, labor, litigation, malpractice, personal injury, real estate, and traffic lawyer services. Those units sit above the map pack, carry the Google Screened badge, and bill per lead rather than per click, which changes the math for a small firm considerably.
Then the boring half, which is where the return actually comes from. Tight keyword sets. A negative list that grows every week. A landing page per practice area that repeats the exact promise in the ad. Call tracking on every number. Ad scheduling matched to when a human answers, and instant text response for the hours when one does not.
Ad copy is where advertising rules bite first. The Louisiana State Bar Association publishes the state’s lawyer advertising rules, which address filing advertisements with the Rules of Professional Conduct Committee, the exemptions listed in Rule 7.8, and the filing number described in Rule 7.2. Reading those rules and applying them to your ads is your firm’s job with your own counsel. It is not ours. We do not file, we do not interpret, and we hold an ad indefinitely rather than run copy you have not cleared.
Here is the part that costs us money to say. If you are a solo with fifteen hundred dollars a month and you want injury cases, do not spend it here. Put it into intake coverage, reviews, and organic pages, and come back when the number has tripled. We would rather lose the ad management fee than take it for a campaign that cannot work.
WHAT WE RUN
What a Legal Paid Program Includes
Nine pieces. The ads are one of them. The other eight are what keeps a paid click from turning into a voicemail.
HOW WE WORK
Why Firms Let Us Near the Ad Budget
- We will tell you not to advertise. When the budget cannot clear the floor for your practice area, we say so on the first call rather than after the first quarter.
- Copy goes through your firm, always. We draft, you approve, we run. We do not make claims about results, we do not use language your firm has not cleared, and we do not represent ourselves as handling bar compliance.
- You own the account. Your Google Ads account, your billing, your history. Not a sub-account inside an agency shell you lose access to on the way out.
- We report cost per signed matter. Cost per click is a vanity number in this category. The meeting starts with what a case cost you to acquire.
- Intake is part of the engagement. Speed to first contact decides most legal inquiries, so we build the response side rather than handing you leads and wishing you luck.
- Month to month, flat management fee. Veteran owned, owner operated. No percentage of spend, because that pays us to talk you into a bigger budget.
What Attorneys Ask Before Funding a Google Ads Account
The money questions come first on these calls, which is correct. Here is how we answer them.
It depends entirely on practice area and market, and any number quoted before those are known is a guess. Family law in a mid-sized parish is a different order of magnitude from urban personal injury. We size the floor first and tell you if your budget clears it.
Case values are high enough that firms can rationally bid a great deal for one signed matter, so everyone does. That is also why discipline pays here more than anywhere else. Every wasted click in legal costs several times what it costs a plumber.
For eligible practice areas they are usually where we start. They bill per lead, appear above the map pack, and carry the Google Screened badge. They also require verification and background checks, so the setup takes longer than a search campaign.
No. We can model a range from the first thirty days of your own account data and hold ourselves to improving it. Anyone offering a cost per case before running a single ad in your market is quoting somebody else’s account.
No. We do not file advertisements, interpret advertising rules, or advise on compliance. Louisiana’s rules are published by the state bar and your own counsel applies them to your ads. We write to what your firm approves and we wait for that approval.
Usually three things. The account had no negative keyword list, the ads pointed at the homepage, and nobody was measuring which calls turned into matters. Fixing those changes the result more often than raising the budget does.
Often yes, and it is cheap. Competitors bid on it, and a person searching your name is already sold. It is one of the few places in a legal account where the cost per acquisition looks reasonable.
No. Flat management fee, month to month. A percentage model pays an agency to keep talking you into a larger budget, which is a conflict we would rather not have sitting in the contract.
