Google Business Profile Management for Law Firms
For a near-me search, the listing is the result. Your homepage is somewhere below it, and most people never scroll that far.
The Listing Is the Front Door Now
This page does not open with a statistic, on purpose. No credible source publishes map pack behavior broken out for the legal category. Google does not release it, and the percentages quoted at legal marketing conferences trace back to companies selling legal marketing. We would rather say that than repeat a number we cannot stand behind.
What is checkable is structural. Search a legal phrase with a place attached on a phone right now. Three business listings occupy the screen before a single organic result appears. For that search the profile is the result, and the firm’s website is a link inside it.
A Google Business Profile is also the single fastest thing to move in local search. Categories, service area, hours, and photos are edits, not a six-month content program. On a neglected profile the first month usually produces more change than the first month of anything else we do.
BlakSheep Creative works out of Denham Springs, Louisiana, and is veteran owned. We set up and maintain profiles for small and midsize firms. Understand that a profile is advertising: the displayed name, the description, the categories, the photos, the posts. What may appear there is governed by your bar’s rules and your firm’s own counsel, not by us. We publish what your firm approves and nothing else.
WHAT IS BROKEN ON MOST PROFILES
A Profile Somebody Claimed Once in 2018
- Primary category set to Lawyer. The broadest, most contested option there is. If you want custody cases, the primary category needs to reflect that, not a label that puts you in a pool with every attorney in the parish.
- Every attorney’s practice area stuffed into secondary categories. Nine categories spanning immigration, injury, and tax tells Google the firm is about nothing in particular.
- A virtual office or mail drop address. Google’s own guidelines state that a rented mailing address the business does not operate from is not eligible for a profile. Firms do this anyway and then lose the listing.
- A home office address shown to the public. Google directs businesses that serve customers at the customer’s location to hide the address. Plenty of solo attorneys have their kitchen table on a map pin.
- A service area covering the whole state. Google advises that a service area should not extend much beyond about two hours of driving time. Drawing it statewide does not extend your reach, it just makes the profile less specific.
- Hours that say 9 to 5 when nobody answers at 4:45. Listed hours set an expectation. A call inside your posted hours that goes to voicemail is a one-star review waiting to be written.
- Stock photography. A gavel, a column, a handshake, a shelf of unread reporters. Every competing firm has the same shelf. Photographs of your actual attorneys and your actual office are the only ones doing any work.
- Messaging switched on with nobody watching it. A person tapping message from a listing expects a reply in minutes. If the notification lands in an inbox nobody reads, the feature is doing harm.
THE SETUP
Categories, Address, Hours, Photos. In That Order
Four decisions carry most of the result. Everything after them is upkeep.
Category first. We pick the primary category around the case type you want more of, then add secondaries only where the firm genuinely practices. A profile that says one thing clearly beats a profile that says nine things vaguely, and the primary category is the strongest single lever on the whole listing.
Address second, and we make this decision once and correctly, because reversing it later can trigger a reverification. Real office with signage and staff, address shown. Meeting clients at their location or by appointment only, address hidden with a service area set. Rented mailbox, no profile at that address at all. Google’s guidelines for representing your business are explicit about the virtual office case, and a suspended listing costs far more than the extra pin was ever going to earn.
Hours and photos third. Post the hours a human actually answers, and let after-hours coverage handle the rest rather than posting fiction. Then replace the stock imagery with real photographs of the attorneys, the entrance a client has to find, the parking, and the conference room. People are deciding if they can sit across from you. Let them see the room.
What we will not do: create a second profile for an office you do not staff, add a practitioner listing without checking Google’s current rules against your setup, or post a review response under your firm’s name without written approval. Cutting corners on a profile does not usually produce a warning. It produces a suspension, and getting reinstated is slower than doing it right the first time.
WHAT WE RUN
What Profile Management Actually Covers
Nine services around the listing. The profile is the fastest lever, and it stops working if the things feeding it are neglected.
HOW WE WORK
Why Firms Hand Us the Login
- We audit before we edit. Categories, address history, duplicate listings, and suspension risk all get checked first. Careless edits on an aged profile can knock it out of the map pack for weeks.
- Nothing publishes without your approval. Posts, photos, descriptions, and every response to a review. Your bar’s rules and your counsel govern what can appear; we implement and maintain it. We do not present ourselves as handling compliance.
- The profile stays in your Google account. We work as a manager on your listing. If we part ways you remove our access and keep everything, including the review history.
- We tie categories to the cases you want. Not to the widest possible net. Narrower usually produces fewer calls and more of the right ones, and we would rather report that honestly.
- Real photos, taken on site. If we cannot get to your office we will tell you exactly what to shoot on a phone. We will not fill a legal profile with stock imagery.
- Month to month. Veteran owned, owner operated, and the person answering your email is the person in the dashboard.
What Attorneys Ask About Their Google Listing
Address questions dominate these calls, because law firm office arrangements are messier than most businesses.
Usually yes, if the firm genuinely occupies and staffs that suite and has signage there. What fails is a rented mailing address you do not operate from. Google states plainly that a virtual office is not eligible for a profile.
Generally no. Google directs businesses that serve customers at the customer’s location to hide the address and set a service area instead. You keep the listing without publishing where you live.
Google advises that a service area should not stretch much past about two hours of driving time from your base. Setting it statewide does not widen your reach. It weakens the local signal that makes the listing rank at all.
Sometimes, and the rules around practitioner listings are narrow enough that we check the current guidelines against your specific setup before creating anything. Duplicate or ineligible listings are one of the more common ways firms trigger a suspension.
Whichever one matches the case type you want more of, not the broadest one available. A family law practice choosing the generic Lawyer category is competing with every attorney in the parish rather than the handful doing custody work.
We draft responses. Your firm approves each one before it posts. Responding to a client review carries confidentiality considerations that only your counsel can weigh, so we never publish one on our own judgment.
Faster than anything else in local search. Category and service area corrections on a neglected profile often move visibility inside four to six weeks. Review volume takes longer because it depends on your clients, not on us.
Sometimes, and it depends on the cause. Address problems and duplicates are the usual triggers. We audit what happened, correct the underlying issue, and file the reinstatement, but no one can promise Google will restore a listing.
