Reputation Management

General Contractor Reviews Earned at the Final Walkthrough.

Your crew spent months on the addition, the owners loved the result, and nobody asked them to say so. The only recent review came from a client upset about a change order. Homeowners planning a big job read that one first. We ask every client at the final walkthrough and answer every review.

  • Homeowners hiring for a large job read reviews for how the contractor handled the schedule, the budget and the surprises, not just for the finished photos.
  • The final walkthrough, with the punch list closed, is the moment to ask. Asking every client, not only the happiest ones, keeps the request within Google’s policies.
  • A calm reply to a delay or change order complaint is written for the next homeowner reading it, not to win the argument.
  • Google’s policies prohibit offering incentives for reviews, and the FTC rule in force since October 2024 bans fake reviews and rewards tied to positive ones.

What keeps the phone quiet

Why good builders end up with thin, sour profiles.

Long jobs, rare reviews

A general contractor closes out fewer jobs than a painter or a plumber, and each one runs for months. When nobody asks at closeout, a long stretch passes between reviews and the newest one describes a project finished ages ago.

The change order review

A client felt blindsided by a change order or a schedule that slipped while materials were late. Their review sits at the top with no reply, and the next homeowner reads it as how every job goes.

Replies that argue the contract

When the owner does answer, the reply quotes contract clauses and lists everything the client signed. It may all be accurate. The next homeowner reads a builder who fights with clients and calls someone else.

“Absolutely outstanding. No matter the time of the day if I have a question I get quick responses. Highly recommend”

What you get

Built to book the job.

A request at every closeout

A text with a one-tap link to your Google review box, sent to every client when the punch list is signed off. With Grow it goes out when the job is marked complete, not when a project manager remembers between bids. Grow for contractors

Problems reach you first

The same message asks how the project went. Anyone who says something is unfinished or wrong gets a call from you that week. Everyone still gets the review link, because filtering who is asked breaks Google’s policies.

Every review answered

Each review gets a reply in your voice: a thank you that names the kind of project in general terms for a good one, and a calm, specific answer for a bad one, without posting a client’s address, budget or contract terms in public.

Delay and change order complaints handled honestly

A reply that explains in general terms what changed, why the schedule moved and what you will do now, with an invitation to call the owner directly. If you got it wrong, the reply says so. Homeowners trust a builder who owns a mistake.

Policy reports, not removals

Fake reviews, posts from someone who was never a client and reviews meant for another contractor are reported with the specific Google policy cited. Google decides. A genuine complaint stays up and gets a reply.

Reviews on your project pages

Your best reviews placed beside the work they describe, such as a kitchen remodel review on the remodeling page, with review markup only where those reviews are visible on the page.

The profile the stars sit on

Reviews show on your Google Business Profile, and the categories, services, service area and project photos that decide whether you appear in the map pack are a separate job. Google Business Profile for general contractors

The short answer

General contractor reviews are what a homeowner planning a remodel or addition reads before inviting you to bid, and SE Ranking shows 110 US searches a month for the phrase. We send a review request to every client at the final walkthrough, reply to every review in your voice, answer schedule and change order complaints honestly for the next reader, report only reviews that break Google’s policies, and place real reviews on your project pages.

Common questions about reputation management for general contractors

When should a general contractor ask for a review?
At the final walkthrough, once the punch list is closed and the client is standing in the finished space. A text with a one-tap link that evening works better than a request buried in the final invoice. Ask every client, including the ones whose project had a rough patch you worked through together.
How should we reply to a review about a delay?
Briefly and for the next reader. Thank them, acknowledge the delay, explain in general terms what caused it, and say what you changed or offered. Do not post contract terms or blame a named subcontractor in public. Homeowners know schedules slip; what they judge is how the contractor handled it.
What about a complaint over a change order?
If the added work was priced and approved before it was done, say so in general terms and invite them to call the owner to go over it. If the paperwork was unclear, own that and say how you handle changes now. Do not post the dollar amounts or the client’s signatures in public.
Can we take something off the final invoice for a review?
No. Google’s policies do not allow incentives for reviews, and the FTC rule in force since October 2024 bans rewards conditioned on positive reviews and bans fake ones outright. Ask every client with no strings attached, make it one tap, and let honest reviews from finished projects carry the rating over time.
Can you get a bad review removed?
Only if it breaks Google’s policies, such as a fake review, one from someone who was never a client, or one about a different business. We report those with the policy cited, and Google decides. A genuine complaint about your work stays up, so the reply is what you control.
Can we only send the review link to happy clients?
No. Sending the link only to clients who said they were satisfied is review gating, and Google’s policies prohibit it. Ask everyone. The same message can ask how the project went so you hear about a problem first and can fix it, but every one of them still gets the link.
