Quick answer

A trailer-based trash bin cleaning business costs roughly $35,000 to $80,000 to start in 2026 once the tow vehicle and a cash reserve are counted. A new entry-level trailer starts at $29,999 and a hot-water model at $45,999. Lower totals near $30,000 leave out the vehicle and working capital. A franchise runs $83,050 to $158,900.

Key takeaways

  • The Bin Trailer lists its entry cold-water trailer at $29,999 and its hot-water model at $45,999 as of October 2026.
  • MoneyPantry puts total startup at $35,000 to $80,000, including a $15,000 to $30,000 cash reserve.
  • A seller-run estimate of about $30,600 leaves out the tow vehicle and working capital.
  • General liability insurance for comparable mobile washing businesses averages about $73 to $75 a month, according to Insureon and NEXT Insurance.
  • Route software starts around $99 to $119 a month for a new route.
  • Wastewater rules are local. Portland and Fort Worth both prohibit sending wash water to the street or storm drain.
  • The Bin Blasters franchise lists a total investment of $83,050 to $158,900 in its 2026 disclosure.

What It Costs to Start a Trash Bin Cleaning Business

Ask an equipment seller what it costs to start a bin cleaning business and you will hear a number near $30,000. Ask an independent guide and you will hear $35,000 to $80,000. Both can point to a spreadsheet. The difference is what each one decided not to count.

We went through the published prices on October 4, 2026: trailer makers, insurers, route software, city wastewater rules and franchise filings. Below is every line, with the source beside it, so you can build your own total instead of trusting someone else's.

How Much Does the Equipment Cost?

The trailer is the biggest check you will write, and published prices fall into two bands.

Entry trailers: about $30,000 to $46,000. The Bin Trailer lists a single-bin cold-water model at $29,999 and a hot-water model at $45,999, each with a 275-gallon fresh water tank.

Hot-water trailers with larger tanks: about $55,000 to $63,000. Utah Bin Blasters lists an assisted-lift trailer at $55,000 and a hydraulic single-bin trailer at $63,000, each with a 380-gallon clean tank and a 325-gallon gray water tank. The same page says financed payments of $1,300 to $1,400 a month are typical.

Used. A 2023 dual-bin hot-water trailer with 55 hours was listed at $47,500 by Western Equipment Finance. Used rigs are scarce, so do not plan around finding one.

Several makers publish no price at all and quote on request. Treat any figure you cannot find in writing as unknown, not as cheap.

What Does the Tow Vehicle Add?

Most seller estimates assume you already own a truck. If you do not, JIM and MoneyPantry both put a used truck or van at $5,000 to $15,000.

Check the rating before you buy. Sparkling Bins says its single-bin trailer needs a truck rated to tow 7,000 pounds, and its dual-bin trailer needs 10,000. A loaded hot-water trailer is heavy, because water weighs more than eight pounds a gallon and you are carrying two tanks of it.

Insurance, Registration and Permits

Insurance. No insurer we found publishes a rate for bin cleaning by name. The closest class is pressure washing. Insureon reports an average of $73 a month for general liability and $262 a month for commercial auto. NEXT Insurance reports $75 a month for general liability, with a range of $57 to $300.

Registration. State filing fees to form an LLC run from $35 to $500, according to LLC.org, with annual report fees on top in many states.

Wastewater. This is the cost that surprises people, and it is set by your city. Portland prohibits commercial wash water from entering the stormwater system, streets or right-of-way, and lists trash receptacle cleaning among the services that need a mobile washer authorization. Fort Worth's permit guidance says it has been illegal to discharge any wastewater off the property for years. Call your own city's stormwater office before you buy a trailer, because the answer decides if you need a reclaim tank and where you can dump it.

Software, Website and Launch Marketing

Route software. Published starting prices for a new route: iServiceRoutes at $99 a month for up to 99 customers, and Jobatory from $119 a month. General field service tools start lower, around $49 a month. We compare them in software for trash bin cleaning businesses.

Launch marketing. Estimates range widely: $500 to $2,000 from JIM for a website, flyers and door hangers, and $2,000 to $5,000 from Service Business Academy. A full vehicle wrap alone runs $2,000 to $5,000, according to Big Visual Group.

The website. It is the one piece of marketing every other piece points to. When we reviewed operator sites, 11 of 13 published their plan prices on the home page, so plan on doing the same from day one.

The Bin Trailer lists its entry cold-water trailer at $29,999 and its hot-water model at $45,999 as of October 2026.

How Much Cash Should You Hold Back?

This is the line the low estimates skip. MoneyPantry includes a cash reserve of $15,000 to $30,000 in its total, and JIM builds in six months of working capital. A route takes time to fill, and the trailer payment, insurance and software are due every month while it does.

Monthly running costs show the same split. A seller-run site, Clean Bin Opportunity, puts them at $350 to $1,070 for fuel, water, supplies and maintenance. MoneyPantry puts them at roughly $4,000 to $5,000 once insurance, software and a loan payment are included. Both are describing the same business. One is counting everything.

What About a Franchise?

A franchise costs more up front and takes a share afterward. The Bin Blasters 2026 disclosure, as summarized by Franchise Depth, lists a $30,000 franchise fee, a total investment of $83,050 to $158,900, a 6 percent royalty and a 1 percent brand fund. It does not publish earnings for its outlets.

An independent start costs less and keeps the whole margin. It also means the marketing, the website and the systems are yours to build.

So What Is the Real Total?

Here is who says what, and what each number includes.

Source Total What it counts
Clean Bin Opportunity (run by a trailer maker) about $30,600 Trailer, insurance, licensing, launch marketing. No tow vehicle, no cash reserve.
JIM $25,000 to $50,000 Used truck and six months of working capital.
MoneyPantry $35,000 to $80,000 Trailer, vehicle and a $15,000 to $30,000 reserve.
Bin Blasters franchise $83,050 to $158,900 Franchise fee, equipment and opening costs.

For an independent trailer start, $35,000 to $80,000 is the range we would plan on. The low end assumes you already own a truck that can tow it.

Two cautions on the numbers you will see while shopping. Break-even claims vary from three months to more than a year, and The Bin Trailer's own price page states there is "no guaranteed customer count, daily throughput, or payback period." And at least one equipment catalog prints an income chart topping $1 million a year. Price the business on what a route charges, which we cover in how to price a trash bin cleaning route.

Where the Website and Follow-Up Fit

The equipment gets you able to clean bins. It does not get you customers, and a new route has no margin for leads that slip away while you are on the truck.

That is the part we do. Grow for trash bin cleaning puts the website, the signup form and the follow-up on one monthly plan, so the launch cost is a subscription and not another large check. If you want the site built and owned outright, see trash can cleaning website design. Once leads start arriving, what a bin cleaning CRM should track shows how to keep them.

Common questions about trash can cleaning companies

Can I start a trash bin cleaning business for under $10,000?
Some guides say yes, using a pressure washer and a homemade setup. Published prices for purpose-built trailers start at $29,999, and cities such as Portland and Fort Worth prohibit sending wash water to the street. A budget build still has to capture and dispose of wastewater legally, which is where most cheap setups fall short.
How much does a trash bin cleaning trailer cost?
As of October 2026, The Bin Trailer lists an entry cold-water trailer at $29,999 and a hot-water model at $45,999. Utah Bin Blasters lists hot-water trailers with larger tanks at $55,000 and $63,000. Several other makers publish no prices and quote on request, so get every quote in writing.
Do I need a permit to clean trash bins?
Often, yes, and it depends on your city. The usual requirement is about wastewater: where the dirty water goes after cleaning. Portland requires an authorization for mobile washers, including trash receptacle cleaning. Ask your city's stormwater or environmental office before buying equipment, since the answer affects which trailer you need.
How much is insurance for a bin cleaning business?
Insurers do not publish a rate for bin cleaning by name. For pressure washing, the closest class, Insureon reports an average of $73 a month for general liability and $262 a month for commercial auto. NEXT Insurance reports $75 a month for general liability. Get a quote that names bin cleaning and your trailer.
Is a bin cleaning franchise worth the extra cost?
It depends on what you would otherwise build yourself. The Bin Blasters 2026 disclosure lists $83,050 to $158,900 in total investment and a 6 percent royalty, and it does not publish outlet earnings. An independent start costs less and keeps the full margin, but the marketing and systems are yours to set up.
How long does it take a bin cleaning route to break even?
Published estimates range from three months to more than a year, and one trailer maker states there is no guaranteed payback period. MoneyPantry estimates about 100 customers at $35 a month to cover a budget rig. Plan for the slower end and hold enough cash to make payments while the route fills.
