TikTok for Small Business, Explained
TikTok works for a small business when you post like a person instead of a brand. Set up a free Business Account, publish short clips that show your work and answer real customer questions, then put money behind the ones that already earned attention. Pew Research Center put TikTok in front of 37% of US adults in 2026, so the audience is there.
TLDR:
- A TikTok Business Account is free. TikTok’s own sign-up page calls it “your free Business Account.”
- 37% of US adults use TikTok, up from 21% in 2021, per Pew Research Center in March 2026.
- Paid is optional. TikTok Ads Manager requires a daily budget above $50 at the campaign level and above $20 at the ad group level.
- 89% of small and medium businesses told TikTok their sales rose after promoting there, in TikTok’s May 2026 report.
- TikTok is now a search engine. Keyword-loaded captions and on-screen text do more for reach than hashtag stuffing.
- US ownership changed in January 2026. TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC runs the American app, with ByteDance under 20%.
- Post consistently for 90 days before judging it. Anything shorter is not a test, it is a guess.
Most TikTok advice is written for product brands with something to ship. That leaves out the plumber in Denham Springs, the pest control route in Baton Rouge, and the shop owner who sells a service instead of a SKU. The tactics still work, but the scoreboard is different: you are buying trust and phone calls, not cart checkouts. Here is the current playbook, with the 2026 numbers behind it. Is TikTok worth it for a small business in 2026?
It is worth it if your buyers are under 50 and you can film yourself talking for 30 seconds. It is not worth it if neither of those is true.
The reach argument is settled. Pew Research Center reported in March 2026 that 37% of US adults use TikTok, nearly double the 21% it measured in 2021. The split by age is what should drive your decision.
Read that middle bar again. 44% of Americans aged 30 to 49 are on TikTok. That age band is the one buying roofs, hiring exterminators, and booking HVAC service. TikTok stopped being a teenager app several years ago, and a lot of local owners have not updated the assumption.
The counterargument is honest effort. TikTok rewards volume and personality. If nobody at your company will get on camera weekly, put the money into search instead and skip this. We say the same thing in our breakdown of when social media is the wrong fit.

How much does TikTok for business cost?
Organic TikTok costs nothing but time. Paid TikTok has a hard floor set by the platform, and it is higher than most owners expect.
TikTok’s sign-up flow describes the step as “set up your free Business Account,” and that account carries analytics, the Commercial Music Library, a website link, and a contact button at no charge. Ads are the only line item with a real price, and TikTok Ads Manager’s budget documentation sets the minimums: a daily budget above $50 at the campaign level and above $20 at the ad group level.
| What you are paying for | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok Business Account | $0 | Analytics, Commercial Music Library, website link, contact button |
| Ad group daily minimum | Above $20 per day | Set by TikTok Ads Manager |
| Campaign daily minimum | Above $50 per day | Set by TikTok Ads Manager |
| Lifetime ad group budget | $20 x scheduled days | A 31-day flight has a $620 floor |
| Filming it yourself | $0 plus 3 to 5 hours a week | A phone is enough. Good light matters more than a camera |
| Outsourced content and management | $750 and up per month | See our Baton Rouge social media pricing guide |
The practical read: you can run TikTok organically for free indefinitely, but the moment you switch on ads you have committed to at least $1,500 a month at the campaign minimum. Budget for that before you open Ads Manager, not after.
How do you set up a TikTok Business Account?
Setup takes about fifteen minutes and there are only four things worth getting right.
- Switch the account type. Open Settings, choose Manage Account, then Switch to Business Account. It is free and reversible.
- Write the bio for a stranger. Say what you do and where. “Licensed plumber, Livingston Parish, same-day service” beats a slogan every time.
- Add the website link and contact button. Business Accounts get both. Send the link to a page that matches the video topic, not your homepage.
- Pick a category that matches your service. It feeds the recommendations that put you in front of local viewers.
One tradeoff to know going in: Business Accounts can only use TikTok’s Commercial Music Library, which is pre-cleared for commercial use. You lose access to some trending chart music, and you gain the right to not get a takedown. For a business, that trade is worth taking.
What should a small business actually post on TikTok?
Show the work and answer the questions people already ask you on the phone. That is the entire content strategy, and it fills a year of posts.
TikTok’s own small business guide notes that 7 in 10 viewers say making people laugh is the most enjoyable part of TikTok ads, which tells you the register to aim for. You are not making a commercial. You are making the thing someone watches instead of a commercial.
| Post type | What it does | Example for a service business |
|---|---|---|
| Answer a customer question | Wins search, builds authority | “Why is your water bill suddenly $80 higher?” |
| Show the job | Proof, and it is the easiest to film | Before and after on a repair, sped up |
| Explain your pricing | Filters bad leads, earns trust | “What a $400 service call actually covers” |
| Correct a myth | High save and share rate | “Vinegar does not kill termites” |
| Introduce the crew | Local recognition | Who is showing up at the house tomorrow |
| Trend with your own spin | Reach, when it fits naturally | Use a trending sound over real job footage |
Notice that five of those six require zero creativity, only a phone and a willingness to talk. Batch-film four of them in one afternoon and you have a month of posts.
On frequency: post three to five times a week and hold that line for 90 days. TikTok’s recommendation system needs a body of work to understand who to show you to, and a handful of posts across three months gives it nothing to learn from.
How does TikTok SEO work?
People search inside TikTok the way they search inside Google, and TikTok reads your words to decide what a video is about. Write for that.
Three places carry weight, and all three are free. Put the phrase someone would type into your on-screen text in the first two seconds. Repeat it out loud in the video, because TikTok transcribes audio. Then write a caption in plain language rather than a wall of tags.
Hashtags still help, but their job has shrunk to categorization. Three to five relevant tags beats twenty. Local tags like #batonrouge or #denhamsprings do real work for a service business, because they narrow the audience to people who can actually hire you.
The demand for this is visible in TikTok’s own data. In its May 2026 small business report, TikTok said searches for “small business” rose 479% during the first quarter of 2026. People are actively looking for smaller operators. Being findable is the cheap half of the job.
How do you scale with creators and TikTok ads?
Scale what already worked. Do not launch a campaign around a video that no human has watched voluntarily.
The cleanest path is Spark Ads, which put paid budget behind an existing organic post. You already have proof the creative holds attention, so you are buying reach rather than gambling on a concept. Run your organic account for a quarter first, find the two or three posts that outperformed, and promote those.
Creator partnerships are the other lever, and smaller is usually better for a local business. A creator with a few thousand engaged followers in your parish is worth more than a national account, because their audience can actually book you. We cover the vetting side on our influencer outreach services page.
The outcome data TikTok publishes on small sellers is genuinely strong, with the usual caveat that TikTok is reporting on itself.
Those numbers skew toward TikTok Shop sellers moving physical product. A service business will not see a checkout metric, so treat them as evidence that small operators get reach, not as a forecast of your revenue.
Who owns TikTok now, and is it safe to build on?
The ownership question that stalled a lot of business accounts for two years is resolved. Building an audience there is no longer a bet on a court date.
TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC was established on January 22, 2026 to run the US app. TechCrunch reported that ByteDance holds less than 20%, non-Chinese investors hold the remaining 80%, and Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX each hold 15%. Oracle serves as the security partner responsible for auditing compliance and handling US user data.
For a small business owner the practical effect is close to zero. The app works the same, the ads platform works the same, and your account carried over. The one thing worth doing anyway is what you should already do on every rented platform: pull your email list and phone numbers off it, and point traffic to a site you own.
How do you know if TikTok is working?
Follower count is the metric that lies. Pick numbers that connect to money before you post anything.
Track three things. First, profile-to-website clicks, visible in Business Account analytics. Second, direct traffic and branded search to your site, because TikTok’s biggest effect on a local business is usually people looking you up later rather than tapping the link. Third, the answer customers give when you ask how they found you, which is still the most reliable attribution a service business has.
Give it a full quarter before you judge. If 90 days of consistent posting produces no lift in any of the three, TikTok is not your channel, and that is a useful answer worth $0 in ad spend.
TikTok questions small business owners ask us
These come up on nearly every call once TikTok enters the conversation. Short answers below, with the reasoning where it matters.
Is a TikTok Business Account free?
Yes. TikTok’s own sign-up page calls it “your free Business Account.” It includes analytics, the Commercial Music Library, a website link, and a contact button. Only advertising costs money.
What is the minimum budget for TikTok ads?
TikTok Ads Manager requires a daily budget above $50 at the campaign level and above $20 at the ad group level. For a lifetime budget, the ad group floor is $20 multiplied by the number of scheduled days, so a 31-day flight starts at $620.
Is TikTok only for teenagers?
No, and this is the most expensive myth in local marketing. Pew Research Center found in 2026 that 44% of US adults aged 30 to 49 use TikTok, along with 30% of those aged 50 to 64. That covers most homeowners.
How often should a small business post on TikTok?
Three to five times a week, sustained for at least 90 days. Consistency matters more than volume, and the recommendation system needs enough posts to work out who your audience is.
Does TikTok work for a service business with nothing to sell online?
Yes, but the goal changes. You are not chasing checkouts, you are earning recognition and search demand. Success looks like more branded searches, more direct traffic, and more callers who say they saw one of your videos.
Can I repost my Instagram Reels to TikTok?
You can, but strip the watermark first. Reposting watermarked video from another app tends to suppress reach, and the tone that works on Reels often reads as too polished on TikTok.
Is TikTok still going to be banned in the US?
The divestiture that drove the ban threat closed. TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC took over US operations on January 22, 2026, with ByteDance under 20% ownership and Oracle as the security partner.
Do hashtags still matter on TikTok?
Less than they used to. Three to five relevant tags is plenty. Keywords in your on-screen text, your spoken audio, and your caption now do more for reach, because TikTok search reads all three.
