How much does it cost to have a website developed in 2019?
The average price for professional design and development of a business website varies from $1000 to $100,000.
We know, that’s one heck of a price range.
The reason the numbers are so varying is because there’s really no simple answer to the question.
There are a LOT of factors associated with the cost to build a website.
Hosting and Web Server Costs
First there are costs associated with, what we will call, the “techy,” side of things. These things are the components associated with having your site online, and ready to be found online:
Purchasing your domain is one of the first things we have our clients do, and you should as well. Your domain is what your website is known as. It’s the text that people type in to find you. In our case, blaksheepcreative.com is our domain. (sidebar: typing in www isn’t necessary in 2019).
There are about a zillion companies like GoDaddy, Squarespace, and even Google, that allow you to purchase your own custom domain for around 15 dollars per year.
Your web host is where your website “lives.” This is where all of the magic happens. The user types your domain into their browser, which (we’ll spare you all of the gory details), is then directed to a server containing all of the zeros and ones.
The price of website hosting varies anywhere from a few dollars to a few hundred per month. This depends on the host, server, location, and a multitude of features and options. Websites that we host are located on high end, cloud-based servers with 99.9% uptime. - SSL Certificate
What exactly is an SSL Certificate? So, you remember back when you actually had to type http:// into your browser’s search bar? Then for some reason, you started having to type https:// Yup! That has to do with SSL Certificates.
SSL stands for secure socket layer, which is a fancy way to say that your data is protected. While they have been around for quite some time, it was back in 2014 when Google really began pushing them.
Initially, the search engine giant started ranking sites with SSL certificates installed (https://) over those without (http://). Then in 2018, they took it to the next level. Google Chrome took serious measures to show its users, which websites have no data encryption.
When visiting a nonsecure site, Google’s Chrome browser will mark HTTP websites with no secure SSL certificate as ‘Not Secure,”
Now, your typical internet user will just slap their back button and go to the next site.
Not too good for your business now is it?
The good news is that you can make sure that your potential customers don’t get these warnings AND keep both your data, as well as theirs secure just by installing a SSL certificate.
Again, the price varies on SSL certificates from $30.00 – $80.00 per year.
Sidebar: Our customers don’t pay for SSL certificates, they’re included with all of the sites we create and/or host.
Actual Website design costs
Now that we’ve gotten all of the tech stuff out of the way, we can discuss costs associated with the actual web design, styling, and creating your website content.
Then, factor in your website’s functionality:
- Do you want social media integration?
- Do you want image galleries?
- Does your site need a newsletter signup form?
- Is your site an online store (eCommerce)?
- The list goes on and on.
Unfortunately every digital marketing agency structures their pricing differently. Some are affordable, while some charge an arm and a leg for a template, let alone a custom website.
You can always use a freelance designer, who will probably just outsource the work to India, because web developers there tend to work for pennies on the dollar.
Remember, you get what you pay for!
The good news is that we have a website cost calculator to give you an idea of what it would actually cost you to have a custom website built by us. Give it a shot and you’ll have a general idea of what a website costs. Shop the figures around.
